This roundtable will draw attention to a lesser-studied area in transnational literary studies: the circulation of literary works in translation between Latin America and India, and the key role played by small journals and presses in furthering this dialogue. The recent publication in India of Sergio Chejfec’s Baroni, a Journey will provide the framework for a discussion of a notable Sur / South literary exchange that stands as an alternative to the conventional channels through which global literature in English is usually disseminated.
Participants:
-Sergio Chejfec, Distinguished Writer in Residence, New York University
-Sharmistha Mohanty, Poet, writer, and publisher of Almost Island Books (almostisland.com), Mumbai, India
-Margaret Carson, Literary translator, Assistant Professor of Modern Languages, Borough of Manhattan Community College/CUNY
Free and open to the public
